    About Our Hospital

Kindred Hospital San Diego (KHSD) is a 70-bed facility licensed by the state of California. It is certified by Medicare and accredited by The Joint Commission. Opened in December 1992, KHSD offers a full range of services for acutely and chronically ill patients. Care is provided at three distinct levels:

    • intensive care services in eight state-of-the-art ICU beds
    • comprehensive acute level care in 62 licensed acute care medical beds
    • telemetry capability housewide

Nearly 50 percent of our patients require mechanical ventilation or tracheostomy care with intensive respiratory support. In addition to working with respiratory failure cases, KHSD is the appropriate medical setting for patients requiring extensive wound care management, medically complex patients requiring isolation, TPN or dialysis, and patients who are catastrophically injured or critically disabled. KHSD is also proud of a new program designed for medically acute patients requiring extensive rehabilitation therapy with more gradual improvement over an extended time.

The main difference between KHSD and other facilities providing care after short-term hospital stays is in the higher level of acuity that KHSD is prepared to handle. Centrally located in the heart of San Diego, patients are transferred to KHSD from ICUs, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, physician offices and homes throughout San Diego County. Referrals are promptly evaluated on site by a team of clinicians specially trained regarding Long Term Acute Care and the programs that KHSD offers.

    Wound Care

Our Wound Care Program is led by a Certified Wound Care Registered Nurse and a dedicated Medical Director. Specific services available include negative pressure wound therapy, mist therapy and surgical debridements.

    Tanstracheal augmented ventilation (TTAV)

Pioneered at Kindred, TTAV is a new, more effective method for weaning patients from ventilators. Kindred Hospital San Diego was the first of 11 Kindred hospitals selected as a test site for a Respironics-Kindred outcome study to evaluate this new technique. It is available to all patients as a tool for weaning from the ventilator when more conventional methods fail.
