From a Kindred Hospital Family
The following letter was written from a Kindred patient's family member to Paul Kinsey, Kindred Hospital San Diego's Director of Case Management.
Dear Paul,
I have finally settled back into “normal life” for me after experiencing one of the hardest weeks of my life, as you well know since you were there every step of the way for me. And I mean every step – I don’t know how words sent electronically on paper can truly express my gratitude, but it’s worth a shot as I don’t think I could have made it through that week without your support.
My mother has had a serious blood condition for years, but it’s always been managed. When it transformed into full-blown Myelofibrosis and we knew a bone marrow transplant was on the horizon, we thought that would be the toughest obstacle in our future. To suddenly get the call that she was hospitalized, in a city unknown to her no less, and in the most extreme pain of her life threw my world upside down. There was no question in my mind I needed to be there to support her, but I didn’t realize how much I needed someone to support me as well.
And that’s where you came in – your warm, friendly demeanor, giving attitude, and obvious sincerity were truly appreciated. But you really went beyond that. My mother told me when she was first admitted and I wasn’t there yet, you held her, calmed her, and helped her visualize peaceful scenarios to get her through the pain. All this and you’re not a psychologist or doctor! I will always be grateful you were there that moment when I couldn’t be.
I can’t count the number of times I just “popped in” to your office with questions, requests, and sometimes frustrations. You always without hesitation made time for my mother and I, and followed up on your actions to make sure anything we discussed was being addressed. On top of that, you made time for the little things like conversations with me that made me smile, laugh, and forget for a moment the severity of the situation – something that was crucial emotionally in getting me through day after day of such a trying situation.
How lucky Kindred is to have you on their team. You brought hope to us at a very dark time, and I will forever be grateful for that.
Thank you a million times over,
Molly
